Adobe's AI Critic: The Future of Self-Correcting Snapshots?

An AI that critiques your photos might make you question your artistic decisions—or just prove annoying.

Adobe has unveiled Project Indigo, an experimental iOS camera app with a host of new features powered by artificial intelligence. Among them is the ability to receive professional critique and editing suggestions for your photographs.

The app’s 'photo critique' feature offers detailed feedback on framing, lighting, colors and emotional impact. It also suggests changes you can make in the viewfinder, such as adjusting exposure or removing objects from the frame. For instance, it suggested that I remove a hexagonal white object from my picture—a spot-on recommendation.

Another useful feature is the ability to generate depth of field using AI, simulating blurred backgrounds. The app also allows you to apply various artistic styles to your photos, reminiscent of early Prisma app outputs, which can add a creative twist but might not always be to everyone’s taste.

The potential downside lies in the prompt-based editing process, where finding the perfect input can still prove challenging. Project Indigo aims for more deterministic outcomes with its features, making it easier to achieve desired results without much trial and error.

Only select users currently have access to these experimental AI tools, but they offer a fascinating glimpse into how photography apps might evolve in the future—potentially empowering users with advanced editing capabilities or becoming yet another source of frustration depending on your perspective.
