At SIGGRAPH, Chaos unveiled V-Ray 7.4, promising to transform how scenes are developed from early look-through final rendering. This update doesn't just shine a light on lighting; it allows for real-time adjustments that can make or break a shot.
The 'virtual production' buzzword has become tarnished by its reliance on digital backdrops and Unreal Engine's complexity. But Chaos believes in location scouting over CGI recreations, arguing that sometimes the real thing is better than a computer’s approximation.
During filming of a Western proof-of-concept project, Chaos’ technology allowed filmmakers to capture an environment with Gaussian Splats, enabling them to relight scenes seamlessly and add elements like burning houses without rebuilding everything from scratch. It's about efficiency and practicality in the virtual world.
This approach isn't just for film sets; Chaos is also developing tools that will allow different creative apps to share and render the same scene, bridging gaps between Vantage’s real-time rendering and V-Ray’s final frame rendering. The result: less rebuilding and more natural workflows.
