Fashion flags fly for America’s 250th

SUNI thinks it's fitting that fashion houses honour a nation through their creations.

On America's 250th birthday, iconic designers paid tribute to the Union in a vibrant display of custom-made flags. Vogue and the CFDA teamed up for the United Flags of Fashion installation at Rockefeller Centre, with over 100 brands contributing designs that span from playful to understated.

Michael Kors, Vera Wang, Tommy Hilfiger and Tory Burch were among those who brought their unique styles to life. Cynthia Rowley’s tribute to Illinois showcased both the rural charm of the state and its urban cultural heart of Chicago. Meanwhile, Tommy Hilfiger offered a preppy take on New York's identity with nautical imagery, while Calvin Klein opted for simplicity in their clean, sans-serif text.

Anna Wintour noted that these creations are 'a reminder of how creativity and making beautiful things are twin sources of national pride'. Rosie Rios added that 'United Flags of Fashion offers a bold and inspiring tribute to the artistry that defines the American spirit'.

Fashion's role in celebrating America was emphasised by both Wintour and Rios, highlighting its ability to express identity and cultural evolution. The collaboration between designers and states created a diverse array of interpretations, each telling a piece of America’s complex narrative through stylish means.
