How to create digital concept art using Blender and Photoshop
Thomas Osbourne reveals his approach to concept art, highlighting Blender as a tool for professional production. His project The Vault stemmed from personal struggles with inspiration and creative block.
The process begins by designing all elements separately in advance, establishing strong values through thumbnailing, and then finalising the paintover. He suggests including minor details, standing out in contrast, using existing assets, and doing a ‘clown pass’ for easier painting in Photoshop. Custom brushes are also key to achieving specific effects like fog and water streaks.
Osbourne’s tips highlight the importance of consistency and respect for boundaries in design. His creative vision is grounded in observation, curiosity and a deep interest in the world around him, making his work not just visually stunning but conceptually rich as well.
