Burger King’s Baby Burgers Stunt: A Bold Move That Worked

Was Burger King trying to foreshadow shrinkflation or just flexing its social media muscles?

Burger King has a complex relationship with parenthood. Less than a year ago, they ran a campaign showing babies gazing longingly at junk food their parents were eating—a move that some found misguided given childhood obesity concerns.

Then came the viral pregnancy test post on their Instagram account in the Dominican Republic. The image, without any caption, sparked confusion and speculation among followers. Some wondered if it was a mistake or an inappropriate work relationship gone wrong.

The post quickly gained over 150,000 likes, making it one of those rare viral phenomena that even rival brands had to respond to. McDonald’s replied with a sly comment about Happy Meals keeping secrets, while Taco Bell and Papa John’s added their own humorous takes.

It wasn't until the next day that Burger King revealed the meaning behind the post: they were launching Baby Burgers—miniature versions of their iconic menu items. This move is either a sign of shrinkflation or an attempt to demonstrate how size matters, even when it comes in bite-sized portions.

Joe, the freelance journalist who wrote this article, concludes that Burger King's stunt was more about social media strategy than anything else. He suggests they might be congratulating themselves for taking Duolingofication (a term implying multilingualism and cultural adaptation) to a new level.
