AI’s Fake Images: When Tech Gets Personal

Are we witnessing the rise of an invisible art form, or just more ways for tech to make us click?

From Tinder's controversial ‘Photo Enhance’ feature to Amazon displaying AI-generated product images, tech giants are increasingly using artificial intelligence to manipulate your visual world. The latest controversy surrounds Tinder’s automatic editing of profile photos, with users discovering that their pictures had been 'enhanced' without consent or request.

In a different realm, Amazon has introduced an AI image generation tool for its marketplace, creating images based on user searches. This could make shopping more convenient but also more confusing, as some sellers complain about AI-generated listings that don't accurately represent their products.

Reddit, too, is experimenting with AI to generate fake screenshots for ads, raising concerns among indie developers over consent and the potential for misleading marketing material. The question remains: are these features intended to benefit users or platforms themselves?

The push towards AI-generated content seems driven by a desire to reduce user churn and drive engagement, whether it’s through more appealing profile photos or more varied ad images. However, consumers might find themselves increasingly deceived by technology that they didn't ask for.
