NYC’s Summer Art Extravaganza: From Teddy Bears to Neural Networks

Artificial intelligence and teddy bears unite in New York City's vibrant summer art scene, offering a unique lens on the world.

Slide through a teddy bear, get weird with a neural network’s hallucinations, play ping-pong on an artist-made table, and so much more. When the sweltering heat and unexpected floods retreat, New York City emerges as a canvas for creativity and curiosity.

From giant kaleidoscopes in Pelham Bay to interactive ping-pong tables at Rockaway Beach, the city’s five boroughs are transformed into open-air galleries. Gabriel Orozco's trompe-l'oeil depictions at JCDecaux bus shelters blend natural and urban life, while Moko Fukuyama and other artists’ sculptural ping-pong tables invite play and public gathering.

Graciela Cassel’s monumental kaleidoscopes at the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum offer a new perspective on nature. Genesis Belanger’s weighty sculptures in City Hall Park encourage reflection and recreation, while Pierre Huyghe’s interactive multimedia installation at MoMA explores AI's interpretation of human imagination.

In Madison Square Park, Roberto Lugo adapts his Puerto Rican pride into colossal ceramic sculptures celebrating everyday beauty. Woody De Othello’s guardians on the Brooklyn Bridge invite reflection, while Chakaia Booker's tire sculptures return to Socrates Sculpture Park for a homecoming. Finally, Oscar Tuazon’s “Eternal Flame” honors Scott Burton at the NYC AIDS Memorial.
