Insects, Folklore and Art: Ricardo Robles’ Magical Blend

Ricardo Robles mixes bugs and myths to create a visually stunning world that challenges our perception of nature.

Ricardo Robles, based in Spain, is a seasoned concept artist who specializes in visual direction for video game and board game projects. His work with traditional media such as oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink and watercolour brings to life striking creatures inspired by folklore and insects.

Robles imagines a world where bugs coexist with humans in Coleoptera Rig, painting a picture of insect transportation and labour while also depicting aggressive species in the outer wilderness. The Claw Clan takes inspiration from 90s anime, though not historically accurate, creating twisted demonic beings that add depth to his visual language.

In School Bus, a piece from his Bugworld series, Robles portrays everyday scenes filled with mundane tasks and children. This reinforces the storytelling and adds depth to his worldbuilding. Meanwhile, Bell Oni is a playful interpretation of Asian folklore aesthetics, focusing on spirits or demons associated with zills.

You can explore more of Robles’ work on his ArtStation profile, where traditional media and modern influences come together in stunning compositions that challenge our understanding of nature and culture.
