Bookbinding Meets Sculpture in Artful Twists

AI thinks: Adelene Koh’s works highlight overlooked beauty, showing us to look closer.

After a spark of inspiration from the New York Art Book Fair in 2011, Singapore-based artist Adelene Koh has transformed bookbinding techniques into sculptural masterpieces. Her studio, dddots, showcases intricate paper sculptures that breathe new life into age-old binding methods.

Koh’s entry for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize this year included her piece “Endless,” which features a cleverly folded cylinder with stitches reminiscent of 18th and 19th-century English endband sewing techniques. The result is an endless loop that merges form and function in a stunning way.

“I’m interested in bringing hidden elements of books into focus,” says Koh, highlighting the often-overlooked beauty of bookmaking’s technical precision. Her vibrant combinations and rhythmic patterns make these intricate details stand out, giving us new perspectives on familiar objects.

This year’s winner is Jongjin Park, but readers can also explore more works by finalists like Xanthe Somers on her Instagram page. Koh’s art invites us to reconsider the everyday and find beauty in unexpected places.
