In West Africa, contemporary artists are reimagining traditional masquerade ensembles, weaving old rituals with new creativity. At the upcoming exhibition New African Masquerades at the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, visitors will encounter vibrant, multi-faceted works that pay homage to centuries-old practices while incorporating fresh perspectives.

The show features the work of four artists: Chief Ekpenyong Bassey Nsa from Nigeria, David Sanou from Burkina Faso, Sheku “Goldenfinger” Fofanah from Sierra Leone, and Hervé Youmbi from Cameroon. Their creations range from geometrically striking masks to intricately beaded ensembles that hint at pop culture references.

Masks and costumes are not solely decorative; they serve as conduits for spiritual engagement and social commentary within West African communities. This exhibition explores how these traditions adapt, combining artistic innovation with the preservation of cultural identity.
