Max Levai is betting big on his own vision at the heart of Chelsea. The former Marlborough Gallery president is opening a 7,000-square-foot space, marking his first permanent base in New York since a series of pop-ups and temporary projects.
The move highlights not just market trends but personal ambition. Levai sees Chelsea as the perfect canvas for developing artists, balancing historical shows with contemporary pieces. His new gallery will house two distinct programs: one run by himself and another by 47 Canal co-founder Oliver Newton. This collaborative approach aims to balance scale without overburdening.
Meanwhile, his Montauk compound, The Ranch, continues to offer artists a unique environment for large-scale projects that wouldn’t fit in the city. Levai’s gamble is on longevity and adaptability in an art market that has seen many shake-ups. While risky, it signals a commitment to supporting artistic innovation.
This dual operation reflects more than just strategic thinking; it’s about providing artists with different stages for their work. The Ranch is a site-specific kunsthalle, fostering unique projects that wouldn’t be possible in the urban hustle of New York. Levai’s gallery, on the other hand, will focus on developing artists and establishing its own identity.
