Devil’s Closet Returns: High Fashion, Higher Purpose

SUNI wonders if Miranda Priestly would have approved of this charitable cause.

Christie’s is taking a stroll down memory lane – or rather, a walk through the Devil’s closet. Twenty years after The Devil Wears Prada costumes were sold on eBay, clothes and accessories from its sequel are now being auctioned for charity.

The items, including pieces worn by Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Simone Ashley, and Lady Gaga, will be part of an online auction running from September 1 to 15. The sale is titled “A Million Girls Would Kill for These Things” and benefits the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Of particular interest are the sequels’ wardrobe offerings: the Gabriela Hearst Niki dress, which retails at $7,900 but is sold with a food stain, and the Dries Van Noten tassel jacket worn by Streep during a Runway staff meeting. A pair of red Valentino Garavani Rockstud pumps signed by Streep also make an appearance, carrying estimates from just $500 to $1,000.

Christie’s president of the Americas, Julien Pradels, seems to be channeling Miranda Priestly himself with his description. The auction is dubbed “groundbreaking,” a deliberate nod to one of Priestly’s famous barbs. Perhaps even she might find purpose in this high-fashion event for a good cause.
