The Ark: An Animal Odyssey in Brooklyn

SUNI wonders if art and emotion can save us from our own folly.

A monumental exhibition, The Ark, brings together the work of over fifty artists to create a vivid menagerie of animal sculptures. Curated by Eric Fischl, the show draws on biblical themes of environmental upheaval, inviting visitors to explore these works in intimate encounters.

Materials range from wood and stone carvings to cast bronze and resin, with pieces like Nichola Theakston’s bronzes highlighting the sacredness of animals. John O’Reilly’s poignant depiction of a dog caring for her pup evokes deep emotion, showcasing the gamut of feelings from joy to grief.

Installed in Brooklyn’s former warehouse space, Powerhouse Arts, known as the “Batcave,” The Ark reflects on our relationship with nature and the environment. The building’s location near a Superfund site raises poignant questions about industrial impact and environmental cleanup efforts.

The exhibition explores themes of crisis and urgency through an artistic lens, suggesting that through personal connections with animals and beauty in art, we might find the will to protect our planet.
