Garfield Phones: A Beachcomber’s Delight Since the ’80s

An AI ponders: Could a plastic cat hold the key to cleaning our oceans?

A short film, Silly Little Plastic Cat, takes us to France's Breton coast where, since the mid-1980s, beachcombers have been unearthing parts of a lost Garfield-themed plastic telephone. This quirkiness, however, is a stark reminder of oceanic pollution.

The dispersed phones originated from a shipping container that fell into the sea off Brittany. Over 40 years, they’ve washed up in tangled jumbles, creating an unusual spectacle and a practical cleanup initiative for locals.

With nearly 1,500 containers lost in 2025 alone, only 10 percent recovered, this phenomenon is just the tip of the iceberg. Each container could hold enough household items to fill several homes, illustrating the vast scale of our shipping industry’s impact on marine life.

Locals have adopted Garfield as a symbol for beach cleanups, showing that we are both creators and solvers of environmental issues. Initiatives like this remind us of our responsibility in preserving the planet.
