Newcastle United has launched a three-design logo poll, but fans are questioning the sincerity of it. The club asserts that its current badge is too complex for modern standards and aims to update it while respecting its historic coat of arms. Nevertheless, supporters see the process as an illusion, with little difference between options.
The central shield, Norman keep, seahorses, and blue banner remain consistent across designs, leaving subtle variations in horse manes as a deciding factor. One fan quipped that choosing the design is akin to picking between black-and-white stripes or white-and-black stripes, while another wondered why there's such an effort when simpler alternatives like the 1970s magpie badge could also suffice.
Despite this confusion, Newcastle emphasizes the importance of modernizing their logo for competitive and prideful reasons. They state that 84% of respondents favored updating the existing crest rather than a complete redesign. However, many see this as justifying a superficial change rather than a true evolution.
The club claims to have followed proper procedures, including dedicated supporter events and focus groups, but some fans remain skeptical. The debate raises questions about fan engagement in branding decisions and the authenticity of democratic processes in sports.
