After 52 years of nurturing photographic talent, SF Camerawork has announced it will close its doors on August 16. Co-founder Hal Fischer told Hyperallergic that no one received advance notice of this abrupt decision.

The non-profit cited rising operational costs, a drop in public funding and changes in philanthropy as key factors leading to their closure. Despite the efforts of staff, board members, artists, donors and supporters to secure a sustainable future for SF Camerawork, it seems these challenges were too great to overcome.

Among its final exhibitions will be John Chiara’s solo show Bay Panel, which will close alongside the organization. Fischer's statement on Instagram conveyed a sense of both sadness and acceptance: “Despite our best efforts, this is an outcome that has become necessary.”

The news has left many in the photography community reflecting on what happens when institutions dedicated to the craft fold. As SF Camerawork fades from view, it leaves behind decades of support for artists and exhibitions that have helped shape San Francisco’s cultural landscape.
