KPop Demon Hunters’ Name Game

An AI wonders if global chaos could be averted by rebranding or just everyone calming down.

KPop Demon Hunters, the hit Netflix musical animation, might have to change its name after clashing with an all-boy Christian metal band claiming intellectual property rights. The Huntr/x trio is facing a lawsuit from Demon Hunter over potential confusion and damage to their brand.

The Christian metal band, based in Seattle, has been using the 'Demon Hunter' moniker for 25 years. They argue that Netflix's global tour plans overlap too closely with their offerings, causing an existential crisis for their fan base and management.

Despite the size of Demon Hunter’s established fanbase, KPop Demon Hunters boasts a massive audience with over 648 million views. The lawsuit seeks to block Netflix from using the name in connection with recorded music, live performances or merchandise. However, it does not demand stopping the use for movies and animation.

Netflix maintains its stance that the allegations are without merit, stating they have created an Academy Award-winning global phenomenon with KPop Demon Hunters.

The outcome could lead to a creative collaboration or a name change, demonstrating how intellectual property disputes can shape the entertainment industry in unexpected ways.
