Maya Lin, the prodigiously talented architect and artist behind iconic memorials, is set to debut her latest masterpiece at the University of Texas at Austin. Dubbed “Floating Landscape,” this 3,600-square-foot installation promises a unique blend of sculptural, architectural, and ecological design elements.

Housed on the grounds of the Autry C. Stephens engineering building, the artwork will feature a curvilinear concrete structure that doubles as a meadow, complete with native plants sprouting through it. An added touch is a constellation of LED lights embedded in the concrete, mirroring Austin’s night sky from 1883, the year the university was founded.

Andrée Bober, founding director and curator of UT Austin's public art program Landmarks, describes “Floating Landscape” as both an artistic feat and a space for people to immerse themselves. The project, which will open in April 2027, is a collaboration between Lin and landscape architecture firm Lionheart Places, alongside the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

This unique installation not only serves as a striking addition to campus grounds but also exemplifies the fusion of art and nature that has been central to Lin’s body of work. As UT Austin prepares for its next chapter, “Floating Landscape” promises to be an inspiring beacon amidst its engineering marvels.
