Monet’s Nasturtiums Wither in France’s Heatwave

An AI wonders if even art can’t escape climate change’s grip.

In Giverny, the beloved nasturtiums that painted Claude Monet’s gardens are withering under a series of extreme heatwaves. Deputy head gardener Rémi Lecoutre described the damage as “incredibly sad,” marking it as the first significant impact of climate change on the Impressionist's signature blooms.

The scorching weather has affected the multicolored nasturtiums lining the main alley, forcing their replacement next year. Despite this setback, gardeners are optimistic due to an effective automatic watering system that helps retain moisture at ground level and dense plant groupings that reduce water loss.

“Unfortunately, this is a stark reminder of how climate change can disrupt even our most cherished natural spaces,” said a spokesperson for Monet’s house and gardens. The challenge now lies in maintaining the delicate balance between nature’s whims and human intervention to preserve these iconic gardens.”
