A new permanent exhibition space for the late modernist sculptor Ruth Asawa is set to open in San Francisco this May. The gallery, an extension of her family-run estate, will feature a range of rarely exhibited works, including looped wire sculptures and paperfolds.
The space, located on Minnesota Street Project in the Dogpatch neighborhood, aims to showcase lesser-known works by Asawa alongside pieces from her contemporaries. It also plans to host exhibitions for students and faculty at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, continuing her legacy as an advocate for arts education.
Ruth Asawa’s commitment to equal access to arts education led her to found the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts in 1982. The new gallery will serve as a platform for ongoing exhibitions that bring her work to light, both locally and globally.
Over a decade after her passing, Asawa continues to influence not only her home city but also internationally through various institutional collections and exhibitions. Her crater on planet Mercury is a testament to the lasting impact of her artistry.
