How those epic Hearthstone cards are made starts with a clear brief from the client, like Blizzard Entertainment, outlining the goals, references and mood. The art brief is the foundation, shaping the entire illustration from the outset.

From there, thumbnailing is where the magic happens. Cole Eastburn advises spending the time to figure out the big picture, not just rushing into the painting. Thumbnails are about problem-solving, not aesthetics, ensuring the story is legible and impactful.

The next step is a rough sketch, where he addresses proportion, perspective, and anatomy. This stage is crucial for ensuring the subject is correctly positioned and visually balanced. Following this, an underpainting is created, focusing on values first, then gradually adding colour.

The value push is about refining the lights and darks, creating a visual path for the viewer. Finally, gradient maps and soft light layers bring the illustration to life, ensuring vibrant and harmonious colours. Each step is meticulously planned, turning a brief into a breathtaking card.
