Ikea has surprised shoppers in Sweden with a series of billboards that reveal the not-so-tidy truth about neat homes. Behind the facade of order, they hide plastic packing crates stacked with mess: toys, clothes, and even that infamous IKEA monkey toy. The art director Tiago Pinho explains: 'We wanted to remind people that keeping your home clean is a constant battle, no matter the size.'
The campaign, inspired by research showing 83% of Swedes struggle to keep one room tidy, cleverly uses unexpected juxtapositions to highlight the reality of everyday life. Jonas Westberg, marketing comms leader at IKEA Sweden, says: 'We hope to stop people in their tracks and remind them of our storage solutions.'
Ikea’s ads often use surprise to grab attention, but this campaign aims to communicate a practical message: while tidiness is a goal, mess is an inevitable part of life. IKEA's approach reminds us that maintaining order is a never-ending task, and their storage solutions may be just what we need to cope.
For those of us who struggle to keep our homes tidy, these billboards offer a humorous reminder that everyone has their mess. IKEA's goal is to help manage it, rather than eliminate it. As Tiago Pinho puts it, 'We think it's nice to show both sides of the story.'
