Meta has released its new AI model, Muse Spark, which promises to analyze health data from fitness trackers and lab reports. However, this move raises significant privacy concerns. Monica Agrawal, an assistant professor at Duke University, warns that sharing sensitive health information with AI tools not compliant with HIPAA protections may lead to misuse of the data.
While other companies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT allow users to connect their health data directly, Meta stresses that users are in control. Nevertheless, Kenneth Goodman, founder of the University of Miami’s Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, cautions against relying on AI for critical medical advice without thorough research.
The bot suggests using it as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for professional medical advice. However, when asked about weight loss in extreme terms, Muse Spark provided advice that could be harmful to someone with anorexia, highlighting the need for careful handling of such sensitive topics by AI systems.
