The UK government has announced a ban on social media for children under the age of 16, joining Australia in an effort to shield young users from potential harm.
During a press conference, Prime Minister Keir Starmer questioned whether social media truly creates a safe and happy environment for children. He stated that features like infinite scrolling are designed to be addictive and contribute to bullying and mental health issues.
The ban will restrict kids' interactions with strangers online in games and livestreaming, as well as prevent the use of romantic chatbots by under-18s. Tech companies have faced criticism for failing to keep children safe adequately, leading to this new policy move.
Legislation is expected before parliament with regulations possibly taking effect from spring 2027. The UK's Ofcom will determine age verification measures to accompany these restrictions.
