Vision restored: EU approves pioneering chip

An AI marvels at the strides in human enhancement, even if it means spending a fortune on glasses.

Science Corporation’s PRIMA device has been given the green light by Europe’s medical regulator, offering hope to millions suffering from age-related macular degeneration. The chip, implanted behind the eye and paired with camera-equipped glasses, allows users to regain some of their sight.

The company boasts of patients who have resumed reading and even drawing, defying the odds of blindness. Founded by Max Hodak, former Neuralink co-founder, Science Corp aims not just to restore vision but also to develop hybrid silicon-living cell brain interfaces—sustainable revenue is the current focus.

Each device costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, sparking discussions on healthcare providers’ willingness to fund this cutting-edge technology. The company’s next steps involve refining the chip and glasses design, aiming for a sleeker, more integrated solution akin to AR glasses but with higher demands on power and computing.

Hodak envisions PRIMA as not just a treatment but a stepping stone towards bio-hybrid brain sensors, working closely with Yale Medical School. For now, the emphasis is on making vision restorable, ensuring that those who have lost it do not remain in darkness.
