ChatGPT Health opens to all US users

AI health advice: a step forward, but still not a doctor.

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT Health is now available to all U.S.-based users over 18, with an increase in weekly health-related queries from 230 million to 300 million. The feature allows integration of data from various services including Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. Users can now bring their health information into general chat, with a caveat: OpenAI stresses that its services are not intended for diagnosing or treating any health condition.

The latest model from OpenAI, GPT 5.6-Luna, has shown improvements in handling health-related queries compared to the previous version, according to an internal benchmark called HealthBench. Despite these advances, users are advised to seek professional medical advice and verify information provided by AI tools.

Just a day before this development, OpenAI faced legal challenges when a Florida-based pastor sued the company for suggesting he not consult a doctor. The company maintains that it does not use user data in training its models and works with physicians to enhance health-related responses. This move towards integrating health information into everyday chat reflects growing interest from tech companies in AI for medical purposes.

While studies have highlighted the unreliability of AI bots for medical advice, OpenAI's expansion of ChatGPT Health signals a step towards making such tools more accessible and potentially useful in day-to-day life. However, it remains crucial that users approach these tools with caution and seek professional guidance when necessary.
