Zap Your Way to Fitness

Could electrical pulses be the future of lazy workouts, or just a tingle in the right direction?

The allure of quick fixes in fitness has led tech companies to develop electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) suits. These wearable gadgets promise to transform your body into a powerhouse with minimal effort. Studios like Body20 and Manduu offer guided sessions, while companies such as Pepper provide home-use options for those seeking convenience.

Research supports the idea that EMS can boost muscle mass and strength, but its effectiveness varies widely. A 2023 study found that combining resistance training with daily EMS could improve muscle performance and reduce body fat in healthy individuals.

Physicians opinions on EMS range from it being a useful tool for rehabilitation to no significant benefit for general fitness. Primary care physician Andrew Mock notes that shivering can achieve similar results, whereas team doctor Ethan Kellum sees EMS as a valuable supplement for older patients with muscle issues.

I opted for the Pepper suit, which is designed to be worn tight and covers major muscle groups from abs to biceps. The experience was unlike traditional workouts—it felt more like being tickled into shape. However, its tight fit meant I had to rethink my public appearance strategy.

While EMS might not replace conventional training for everyone, it offers a promising avenue for those looking for an alternative or supplementary way to stay fit. Whether you're a lazybones or a determined exerciser, the future of fitness may just involve some electrical stimulation.
