Eric Wu, the brains behind Opendoor, has launched NavigateAI, an AI assistant for construction workers. The shortage of skilled labour in the industry is acute, with the Associated Builders and Contractors estimating a need for over 349,000 additional workers this year. Wu's solution? An AI copilot that acts as a real-time coach, helping workers ensure their projects meet codes and specifications.
Through the camera on their smartphone or Meta’s AI glasses, workers can ask for assistance in plain language. The system can pull up relevant information, and in hands-free mode, it’s designed to be superior to using a phone. The company is also partnering with AIM, a Meta-backed trade school, to reach workers before they start on a job site.
However, adoption is not uniform. Younger workers tend to embrace the technology, but seasoned workers, who Wu describes as '30-year journeymen,' are more sceptical. Their industry knowledge is invaluable, and replacing it with technology is a challenge.
From a business perspective, NavigateAI's model is innovative. Instead of charging a fixed fee, they take a share of the value created, which could be significant given the $9 billion Lennar spends on labour annually. The long-term goal is to collect data from completed jobs, creating a valuable dataset for robotics companies.
The future of construction might be tech-driven, but as Wu acknowledges, there are hurdles. Proving the value of AI in projects and overcoming resistance from experienced workers will be key to success.
