At a recent Google Cloud event, the tech giant unveiled its Gemini AI, bringing it into the agentic age. The unified agent can now not only answer questions but also handle tasks on the user’s behalf, all through a single interface.
This move follows the trend of AI tools expanding beyond just conversational experiences, now capable of scheduling, booking appointments and even generating code. Google is initially targeting businesses, given Gemini’s adoption in the corporate world, before rolling it out to consumers. The agent can be given objectives, connect to internal systems, and work across multiple platforms, including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack.
Users will be able to track what Gemini is doing through a “tasks inbox” interface, with the AI having its own email address and context, much like a co-worker. Early testers include sportswear brand On, Shopify, and PayPal. Notably, Google is introducing new flexible spending options to help businesses manage their enterprise AI costs more effectively.
With nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses already using Gemini Enterprise, it seems the future of work might just be here, with AI agents doing the heavy lifting. Will this herald a new era of productivity, or just more emails to sort through?
