Airbnb has made a house rule change that might make your future stays a little less sweaty. Effective from reservations booked on or after November 20th, hosts are banned from asking guests to do chores like washing dishes or taking out the trash, with some minor exceptions. These include putting dirty dishes in the sink and separating trash and recycling. Instead, hosts can request that guests put used dishes in the sink, gather towels, and separate waste in designated indoor bins.
The move reflects a shift towards a cleaner, more user-friendly experience for guests, but it might also raise eyebrows among those expecting a more traditional stay. According to Airbnb, the new rules aim to ensure that guests have a ‘reasonable’ experience, while still allowing hosts to maintain a certain level of cleanliness and order.
However, the policy's implementation has not been without its challenges. Some hosts have raised concerns that the restrictions could pose health risks, particularly if guests are asked to do minimal cleaning. Nevertheless, Airbnb is firm, stating that there can be exceptions, such as asking guests to dispose of trash in an animal-proof container in areas like bear country.
The new rules are part of a broader effort by Airbnb to make the booking process more transparent and user-friendly. This includes displaying hosts’ requests more prominently, with a new 'rules and requests' section on listings. Guests can now easily see if a listing includes cleaning requests or other specific rules.
For now, the policy change appears to be a step towards a more streamlined and less demanding experience, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out in practice.
