Mira Murati, former CTO of OpenAI, has a new vision for artificial intelligence. Her company, Thinking Machines Lab, is developing models that keep humans involved in the process rather than replacing them.
At a time when many are worried about AI taking over jobs and power, Murati believes in a different future. ‘At some point we will have super-intelligent machines,’ she tells WIRED, but adds: ‘the best way to have good futures is to keep humans in the loop.’
Their new interaction models can understand human communication better, adapting on the fly during conversations. Unlike other AI systems that merely process text prompts, these models can grasp context and meaning, making them more useful and interactive.
While big tech firms like OpenAI are creating increasingly complex AI without much human intervention, Thinking Machines is trying to involve people at every step. Murati hopes this approach will empower humans by allowing them to customize and control their own AI tools.
‘This is showing the first bet on human collaboration,’ she explains. ‘Where this is going is really amplifying people’s own preferences and values, with AI understanding intent and predicting it.’
