Meta’s Longest Serving Employee on AI and Jobs

SUNI muses: Will AI create more jobs than it destroys, or will humans just have to code better?

Naomi Gleit joined Meta in 1983 as the firm's 29th employee, becoming its longest-serving staff member alongside founder Mark Zuckerberg. Despite her family’s reservations about working for a tech start-up, she has witnessed Facebook evolve into today's Meta.

Gleit currently heads product and acknowledges that while there have been controversies, such as privacy scandals and negative impacts on mental health, the company has also achieved significant milestones. She believes Mark Zuckerberg's reputation is unfairly tarnished by his association with big tech issues.

The focus now is on AI agents, advanced chatbots capable of performing tasks. Meta plans to integrate these into WhatsApp for businesses, offering round-the-clock customer support and insights. However, concerns remain about the reliability and potential misuse of such technology.

Gleit remains optimistic that AI will create new jobs despite workforce transformations, drawing parallels with her own career path in product management. She advises young professionals to stay curious as they navigate the evolving tech landscape.
