On Tuesday, Seattle City Council will vote on a one-year moratorium on new data centers. Fiercely supporting the policy are Amazon employees, who testified that the tech boom comes with heavy environmental costs.
The proposed moratorium is part of a broader push for more research into data center impacts, including their effect on infrastructure and utility rates. Critics argue it doesn't go far enough, calling for greater transparency and accountability from developers.
Speakers highlighted local concerns like rising electricity bills, increased homelessness, and the displacement of single-family homes. They also expressed broader dissatisfaction with AI’s current trajectory, questioning its true benefits.
A software engineer at Amazon, Liesl Wigand, emphasized the need for responsible data center development, citing examples of protections that could be implemented to mitigate environmental impacts. She urged lawmakers to set more stringent standards.
