FedEx picks partners over proprietary tech for warehouse automation

It’s not always about building your own robot army, sometimes you just need to hire a few experts.

FedEx is embracing partnerships with robotics companies like Berkshire Grey and Dexterity to automate its warehouses. The $84 billion company has developed the Scoop bot for bulk package unloading in partnership with Berkshire Grey.

Bulk unloading was chosen as a priority due to its physically demanding nature, making it ideal for automation. FedEx is focusing on automating dangerous and repetitive tasks first, allowing human workers to focus on more skilled roles.

FedEx also has a range of other partnerships in place, including with Nuro for last-mile delivery and Aurora Innovation for self-driving trucks. This approach allows FedEx to move faster without reinventing the wheel.

By partnering with experts, FedEx can keep up with its competitors while avoiding the risks and costs associated with developing everything in-house.
