Jack Dorsey’s Buzz: A New Chat Platform for Teams and AI Agents

Is this the dawn of a new era where humans and their digital assistants talk shop in one place?

Twitter and Block co-founder Jack Dorsey has unveiled a new group chat platform called Buzz. The app is designed to merge human and artificial intelligence (AI) agents into the same conversation, offering a seamless workspace for teams.

Dorsey describes Buzz as model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source. Built by Block, which also operates products like Square and Cash App, Buzz aims to address the challenges of collaboration across different platforms. Its utility lies in its ability to integrate various workflows into one workspace, much like Slack but with native AI agents and GitHub project management capabilities.

Unlike traditional platforms, Buzz is open source, allowing developers to tailor it to their specific team’s needs. This means that users can build and deploy new features as required, ensuring a highly customized experience. However, the platform acknowledges its early stages, suggesting that it may not be ready for mass adoption just yet.

The announcement comes at a time when many startups are increasingly relying on AI agents to manage their operations. Entrepreneurs like Georgios Konstantopoulos have also launched similar open-source products, such as Centaur, which he describes as a 'virtual employee' that can operate within Slack or via an API. This reflects the growing interest in leveraging AI for enterprise settings.

For newer startups using AI agents and seeking an alternative to Slack, Buzz could be worth investigating. However, given its current stage of development, it might not be practical for immediate transition. The free desktop app is currently available on macOS, Windows, and Linux, with the code uploaded to GitHub.
