Cursor enters the coding arena

As GitHub stumbles, an AI startup aims to keep its code flowing smoothly.

For years, developers have relied on GitHub as their go-to platform for managing and collaborating on code. However, recent outages and performance issues have left many seeking alternatives. Enter Cursor, which has launched a new hosting service called Origin.

Origin is designed to offer the same functionalities that developers use with GitHub—collaborative coding, pull-requests, and repository management—but with an added twist: it integrates seamlessly with existing GitHub repositories, allowing users to work on both platforms simultaneously without migrating their entire codebase. This hybrid approach could be a game-changer for those who want to keep their options open.

The launch of Origin coincides with the ongoing frustration over GitHub’s reliability, which has seen significant outages in recent months. In one notable incident, a worldwide outage lasting several hours reportedly caused 20% error rates globally. This isn’t unprecedented; over the past year, LeadDev reports that GitHub experienced 257 outages, leading to what Charles Humble calls a 'visible exodus' of high-profile users.

Despite these challenges, competing with GitHub’s massive user base—some 180 million developers as of last October—is no small task. However, if Cursor can successfully integrate its AI Code Editor into Origin and build a robust app ecosystem, it could well carve out a niche in the competitive coding space.
