Anime streaming giant Crunchyroll has confirmed a data breach affecting customer service ticket information, following claims by a hacker that user data was accessed. The incident, involving at least eight million support ticket records and six-point-eight million unique email addresses, highlights the vulnerabilities in even well-known tech companies.
Crunchyroll operates as a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex, serving 15 million subscribers worldwide. Its website states it has over 2,000 titles available in more than 12 languages. The breach reportedly originated from a Telus Digital employee, who was compromised on March 12 via an Okta single sign-on account.
The company is investigating the claims and working with cybersecurity experts but has not confirmed any evidence of ongoing unauthorized access. Meanwhile, Cybersecurity-focused accounts like International Cyber Digest have provided insights into the potential extent of the breach.
Crunchyroll did not respond to follow-up questions about its third-party vendor relationships or the specific impact on user data. Telus Digital declined to comment on the matter.
