Think Tank’s Census Honeypot

Are data leaks sowing distrust? It’s a worrying thought.

The USCB is bracing itself for a think tank takeover. Staffers from the America First Policy Institute (AFPI), a right-wing group with deep Trump roots, have burrowed into the bureau, bringing with them access to sensitive data and a penchant for conspiracy theories. In August, they published a report claiming thousands of noncitizens voted in the 2020 election, a claim that has since been cast into doubt. Experts fear this may just be the tip of the iceberg, with more misinformation waiting to undermine upcoming elections.

A Census employee, speaking anonymously, expressed concern: 'Frankly, it's disrespectful to the institution.' The WIRED investigation reveals that AFPI members now make up almost the entirety of a special team detailed to the USCB. These staff members are temporary appointments under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act, allowing them to work for up to two years. One of the team members, Thomas Lane, is a notorious election denier who was involved in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Meanwhile, AFPI has had a hand in shaping many Trump administration policies. Brooke Rollins, its first CEO, is now secretary of agriculture, while Linda McMahon, previously on its board, is secretary of education. The organisation's influence extends to high-ranking positions across the administration, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Environmental Protection Agency.

The worry is that these think tank members could use their access to manipulate data, sowing doubt and distrust in a way that could have serious political ramifications. As WIRED notes, the bureau and AFPI have declined to comment on the matter.
