A notorious hacking group, ShinyHunters, has claimed to have breached the FBI, stealing data on thousands of agents and applicants. The hackers, who often use large-scale data theft for extortion, made the claim on their dark web leak site, TechCrunch reports. They claim their breach is not financially motivated, but are demanding the FBI remove a report they say contains false allegations against them.

The hackers stole terabytes of data from an Oracle PeopleSoft server and an Amazon-hosted government cloud, potentially compromising sensitive information. The stolen data could pose a significant counterintelligence threat, with hackers using it to coerce or extort FBI agents and their families. The FBI has not commented on the breach.

This is the second known breach of an FBI system this year. Unidentified hackers previously broke into the agency’s system for managing real-time wiretaps and foreign intelligence-gathering warrants. Additionally, FBI director Kash Patel’s personal email account was hacked and leaked by an Iran-backed group in retaliation for U.S.-led strikes against Iran.
