A Democratic US representative has proposed scrapping the billion-dollar border surveillance tower program, citing troubling deaths near the towers.

Representative Delia Ramirez, who sits on the Homeland Security Committee, cited MIT Technology Review’s investigation, which found that nearly 1,100 people died within range of the towers between 2015 and 2026. She said, “The towers that we have paid a billion dollars to just don’t work.”

The legislation, the Reimagining Safety Act, is part of a broader proposal to replace the Department of Homeland Security with a new Department of Community Safety, while moving CISA, FEMA, TSA, and customs functions to other agencies. Ramirez’s office has yet to release the text of the proposed legislation.

The move comes amid growing public support for abolishing the ICE agency, which has been criticized for its enforcement operations and shootings by ICE and CBP agents. Representative Ramirez, however, wants to go further, calling for the dismantling of the entire Department of Homeland Security.
