Some Google Home Speaker owners are experiencing a tech glitch, with their devices downloading hundreds of gigabytes of data daily. The issue, reported by 9to5Google and several Reddit users, is thought to be linked to failed attempts to update firmware. Thankfully, Google is aware and a fix is rolling out, but the extent of the problem remains unclear.
Reports suggest that the issue is particularly noticeable with the new Google Home Speaker model, with one device consuming over 200GB per day. However, not all speakers are affected; one colleague’s speaker downloaded just 2GB in a month, compared to 132GB for an impacted device.
This could be problematic for users on limited data plans, as the bug could rapidly deplete their allowance without their knowledge. Regularly checking device data usage may be necessary to avoid unexpected charges. Google has not provided further details on the cause or confirmed which devices are impacted.
The situation raises questions about the reliability of firmware updates and the potential for such issues to arise in other smart home devices. As we increasingly rely on technology, these glitches highlight the need for better oversight and clearer communication from tech companies.
