Sam Altman’s World project has launched a global expansion for Tinder verification through its Orbs, which scan users’ irises to prove they are human. This marks one of the biggest tests yet for biometric identity verification in widespread consumer use.
The move follows similar initiatives by other tech giants like Zoom and Docusign, who are also integrating World’s technology into their services to combat bots. However, despite 18 million verified users worldwide, adoption remains a challenge with resistance from governments concerned about data protection laws.
Altman’s company is optimistic, seeing major platform partnerships as key to mainstream acceptance. They’ve already tested the technology on social media platforms like Reddit and are expanding it into areas such as concert ticketing for verified humans only.
The project’s initial name, Worldcoin, hinted at a broader plan to issue digital currency alongside identity verification. However, it has since shifted focus to becoming an essential tool in the age of advanced AI agents, creating a private, decentralized way to verify identities online without exposing personal information.
