Peter Williams, a former cybersecurity executive who headed up L3Harris’s hacking and surveillance tech division, has been ordered to pay $10 million in restitution to his ex-employers. This comes on top of the $1.3 million he was previously fined for stealing advanced hacking tools from Trenchant, a part of L3Harris.
Williams, 39, an Australian national who also worked in Australia’s intelligence services, is accused of selling stolen cyber exploits and surveillance technology to Operation Zero, a Russian firm that acts as a broker for the nation's government and other clients. He used the proceeds to buy luxury items and property.
Williams pleaded guilty last year and was sentenced to over seven years in prison. L3Harris claims it lost up to $35 million due to his theft, while U.S. prosecutors say he harmed global cybersecurity by giving sensitive tools to potential adversaries like Russian spies and Chinese cybercriminals.
The case highlights the ethical dilemmas faced by tech companies dealing with sensitive information, especially in an era where tech espionage is rampant and lucrative.
