Apple has pushed out the latest version of its iPhone operating system—iOS 26.5—that introduces end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices.
The new feature is a significant step towards secure communication across different platforms, but its success heavily depends on your carrier’s support for RCS messaging. Major US carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T are on board, but not all are.
Once you’ve updated to iOS 26.5, check the settings within Apple’s Messages app to ensure end-to-end encryption is enabled. The green toggle will confirm if it's active, ensuring your chats with Android users remain private. However, messages sent only between iPhones continue to be iMessage-encrypted.
Other minor changes in iOS 26.5 include new search suggestions in Maps and Pride-themed wallpapers. Expect more substantial updates at Apple’s WWDC developer conference later this year.
The rollout of this feature highlights the ongoing effort by tech giants to enhance privacy and security, even if it means working with other mobile operating systems. Will you update your iPhone?
