WhatsApp is set to let people chat without revealing their phone numbers by exchanging unique usernames instead. This feature, rolling out globally, aims to give users control over how they appear on the app.
The firm says names will be limited to 35 characters and only a few restrictions apply, such as blocking high-profile individuals from using their names. Users can reserve a username now, although it won't become mandatory for some time yet.
Meta-owned WhatsApp hopes this new system reduces privacy concerns while maintaining its free service model. However, critics warn that usernames might not be enough to protect against scams and that the company still collects metadata for marketing purposes.
The feature is part of a broader trend towards more flexible online identities, but questions remain about how effective it will be in truly protecting user privacy.
