The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed it has purchased spyware from Paragon Solutions, a move that could expand its capabilities in drug trafficking investigations.
In a letter to lawmakers, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons stated that the agency's criminal investigative unit, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), would use 'cutting-edge technological tools' to combat encrypted communication platforms, highlighting the growing issue of accessing critical data.
Critics argue that this move could raise significant constitutional and civil rights concerns, especially for vulnerable communities. Rep. Summer Lee expressed concern over the agency's approach, stating that instead of addressing these issues, ICE is asking the public to trust vague assurances.
The use of Paragon’s spyware has also been controversial internationally, with reports of its misuse in Italy leading to a cut-off from certain agencies. This development raises questions about the broader implications of such technology on privacy and civil liberties within the United States.
