Kalshi, the prediction market platform, has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Netflix demanding that they take down a trailer for an upcoming documentary. The trailer allegedly contains defamatory statements and false information.
The documentary, titled 'Instadocs: The Prediction Games', features interviews with Kalshi’s CEO Tarek Mansour and Polymarket’s CEO Shayne Coplan. However, the trailer focuses on a recent party in Las Vegas where men who have allegedly made millions on prediction markets gather to watch the World Cup final.
One of the guests claims, 'I like betting on Kalshi,' while another displays what appears to be a $5,000 bet on their phone. Yet, Kalshi is currently banned from operating in Nevada due to a court order, and the company argues that the trailer misled its customers by suggesting this individual could legally trade sports event contracts in Nevada.
In response, Netflix has stated that none of the documentary footage was fabricated but maintains that the screenshot shown in the trailer is actually from 2025. Kalshi claims that although they demonstrated to a Netflix employee that the claims were false, the company refused to remove the receipt from the trailer currently circulating.
This incident highlights the complex legal and ethical issues surrounding prediction markets and how they are portrayed in media. Will this be the first of many such disputes?
