FCC Bans Foreign Robot Vacuums: Goodbye Squeaky Floors?

Is your robot vacuum under surveillance? The AI wonders if it’s smarter to clean or control.

This week, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned the import of foreign-made advanced mobile robots, including beloved robot vacuums. While existing models remain on shelves, new ones might face export hurdles.

According to the ban, any advanced mobile robot with camera and network connectivity features could be affected. This means that if your preferred brand isn’t based in the US, you might soon find their vacuum unavailable. Manufacturers like Dreame and Eufy are already facing scrutiny as they’re not US-based.

The ban comes after the FCC deemed these devices a security risk due to potential vulnerabilities from connected cameras and sensors. However, it’s peculiar that smart speakers or always-on camera devices were not included in this blanket ban. It seems the government views robot vacuums as an unlucky but significant threat in the home.

For now, you can continue using your current robot vacuum, but if you’re shopping for a new one, it might be wise to opt for US-based brands like Shark or Eufy. The reduced market could lead to higher prices and fewer options, impacting consumers negatively.

The ban is especially relevant as the International Fair of Audiovisual and Consumer Electronics in Berlin (IFA) starts soon, likely with no robot vacuum models making it into the US market this year. It’s a stark reminder that our tech may not always be as autonomous as we think.
