The US Department of Justice has announced that TikTok will pay a hefty $400 million to settle a lawsuit over alleged breaches of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

In 2024, the DOJ accused TikTok of collecting data from children without parental consent and failing to delete accounts when parents requested. TikTok is required to pay $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million contingent upon a court order.

The settlement highlights significant changes in TikTok's management since the lawsuit was filed. The company claims they have enhanced privacy measures for younger users and improved parental controls. However, it remains unclear if these updates will prevent future legal troubles.

TikTok did not immediately provide a comment on the matter. Meanwhile, the deal to restructure ownership in the US has finally been finalized, bringing an end to months of negotiations.
