Apple's Latest Watches: Bigger Sensors, New Features, and Heavier Devices

Despite minor improvements, the latest Apple Watches are just a little more than last year’s models in every way that counts—except for weight.

Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4, which come with some significant upgrades, especially in health and fitness tracking, as well as new audio transcription features. However, the new models are priced the same as their predecessors, starting at $399 for the Series 12 (aluminium version without cellular) and $799 for the Ultra 4. The primary differences lie in the S11 processor, which powers new Apple Intelligence features and more comprehensive health programs. The Ultra 4 also boasts longer battery life, up to 50 hours compared to 42 on the previous model. While the watches are slightly heavier, with the heaviest ceramic Series 12 version weighing 42.8 grams for the 42mm model and 52.9 grams for the 46mm version, the Ultra 4 is the heaviest, at 63.1 grams.

Despite these changes, the watches continue to offer a familiar array of features, making it challenging to distinguish between the new and old models, except for the weight. For those eager to explore the full scope of the changes, be sure to check out our hands-on review. While the new Apple Watches bring some exciting tech advancements, they might not be the revolutionary leap many were hoping for. The biggest change, the S11 processor, supports more detailed health tracking and new features but doesn’t drastically alter the user experience. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or a fitness buff, the new watches are still a significant investment that might not justify the upgrade for all users.
